Mexico's 177 Pueblos Magicos have always been destinations spotlit for their culture and history. But for travel advisors, they haven't always been the easiest to sell. Logistics could be tricky, infrastructure inconsistent and reliable information hard to come by. That may be about to change.

With the completion of Phase I of Mexico's National Strategy to Strengthen Magical Towns, the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) has laid the groundwork to make these destinations more accessible, better promoted and more appealing for a broad range of travelers.

The biggest milestone is that Sectur now has a complete technical profile for every Pueblo Magico — a 360-degree look at each town's infrastructure, sustainability initiatives, tourism services and cultural assets. This information will guide future investments and help ensure that growth doesn't come at the cost of a town's identity.

For travel advisors, that means more consistent experiences for clients, better-prepared local tourism providers and an easier time sourcing accurate, up-to-date details when building itineraries.

Getting to the Magical Towns

Many Pueblos Magicos sit within a short drive of major resort destinations or gateway cities, making them ideal for daytrips or short add-ons. The new strategy aims to capitalize on that proximity by improving roads, visitor services and marketing campaigns that highlight these connections.

For example, San Sebastian del Oeste is just two hours from Puerto Vallarta, offering a cooler mountain escape steeped in mining history. Real de Catorce in San Luis Potosi is a gateway to desert landscapes and Huichol culture, easily paired with a larger circuit through Central Mexico.

One of the challenges for advisors is keeping itineraries fresh outside peak seasons. Sectur is tackling this through National Sports Tourism initiatives and the Magical Color Routes program. Sporting events in towns like Zacatlan (near Puebla) and colorful murals in historic centers give travelers a reason to visit any time of year.

Strategic alliances with BBVA and Visa will make these towns more visitor-friendly through expanded payment options, financial training for local businesses and data-driven tourism promotion. A media partnership with Mexico Desconocido ensures that more events and experiences are featured nationally and internationally.

For advisors, these upgrades mean fewer friction points when clients want to pay with credit cards or find reliable event information.

Removing friction points

While Pueblos Magicos have long been a selling point for culturally curious travelers, they now offer more ways to weave local, sustainable experiences into broader Mexico itineraries. Advisors can pair a beach vacation with a cultural side trip or create multi-stop roadtrips connecting several towns within the same region. They can also market these towns as ways to see Mexico beyond resort walls.

Phase I is just the beginning. Sectur's next steps included targeted infrastructure projects, expanded online promotion and new training for tourism workers. The ultimate goal is growth that benefits visitors and residents alike.

For travel advisors, that means a window of opportunity to get familiar with these destinations, build relationships with local providers and position yourself as the go-to expert on Mexico's culturally rich towns.
