So far, Americans seem bullish on visiting Europe this year, despite geopolitical tension between the U.S. and the European Union.

This is great news for travel advisors. European countries are perennially popular and lucrative destinations.

But clients might have questions, given that President Donald Trump's insistence on making Greenland a U.S. territory is unpopular in Europe and is viewed as a violation of sovereignty.

So, how do you talk to them about it?

Byrd Bergeron, CEO of the Travel Byrds in Cincinnati, says that "your clients will take your cues."

"Be well-read about the situation, but don't lean into the hysteria, especially before things are truly being impacted," Bergeron advised. "I believe your mindset absolutely affects how you speak with your clients, so keep yourself positive, but don't stick your head in the sand, either. It's a fine line."

Bergeron is on track to complete about $21 million in sales this year, and about 60% will come from Europe bookings.

Florence Brethome, an advisor with TravelStore in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., said advisors should recommend refundable airline tickets and travel insurance.

Bergeron also encourages insurance, but if clients are still concerned, she recommends that they book something closer to home.

In addition to refundable flights and insurance, Brethome also talks to clients about Europeans' attitudes toward Americans.

"Europeans in general do not hate us," she said. "They feel bad for us. They also need us to continue travel to Europe, too."

It's a good point: Travel and tourism are vitally important to the economy in Europe. The World Travel and Tourism Council last year estimated that by 2035, travel and tourism will support more than 30 million jobs in the European Union.

It's not dissimilar to the small New Jersey beach town where I live. Our local economy depends on summer visitors.

Do locals love when they can't find a parking space within a 5-minute walk to the beach? No. Could our local businesses survive without the summertime bump that visitors provide? Also no.
